I  have been learning about place value

Kia ora koutou.  Jemima has shared photos of her writing, maths and spelling.  I have highlighted the title and the good use of capital letters, ka pai!  Great to see you using playing cards to learn about place value.  Well done using your spelling words in sentences, and for your handwriting.

Bella's cicada shells

What a big morning counting cicada shells!  They were divided up and spread around our maths learning tables where each group made groups of ten so they could skip count easily.  Some tables had 160 cicadas, that is 16 groups of ten.  One group had 70 cicadas, that was 7 groups of ten.
Lots of skip counting in tens to 100, then in 100s to get our final total of 915 cicada shells.
The closest guess came from Keearas' whanau with Ashleigh guessing 889.  Ka pai Ashleigh!

Miss Stewart asked the class how many cicadas were in the tin. The students had to guess what number of cicadas there would be in the tin. Then a  group of students grouped the cicadas into groups of 5 and share this picture with the class and they all counted the groups. The answer was 105 cicadas. Miss Stewart guessed 100 so she was the closest.
